What Should I Expect When I Fast?

As we begin our corporate fast tomorrow, it's important to remember: we aren't fasting to make God do something. We’re creating intentional space to become more attentive to the One who is already present and at work in us.

1. Expect your flesh to notice.

Fasting interrupts our normal patterns and appetites. You may feel hungry, distracted, uncomfortable, or tempted to focus on what you're giving up.

That's part of why fasting can be revealing. It can expose what normally has our attention and remind us that our dependence goes deeper than physical appetite.

Jesus said:

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”

Matthew 4:4

When hunger gets your attention, let it become a reminder to turn your attention toward God.

2. Expect to become more intentional about listening.

In Acts 13:2, the believers were worshiping and fasting when the Holy Spirit spoke and gave direction.

Their fasting didn't cause the Holy Spirit to become present. He was already present. But in that intentional posture of worship, fasting, and seeking God together, they were attentive to His direction.

That's our posture this week.

We're not saying, “God, if we fast, will You finally speak?”

We're saying, “Holy Spirit, You are already here. Help us quiet the distractions so we can recognize and respond to what You are saying.”

Remember

Don't measure the success of your fast by whether something dramatic happens.

The goal isn't an experience.

The goal is Jesus.

Tomorrow, we begin together. Come expectant, not because we're trying to get God to come closer, but because He is already with us.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, as we enter this fast, help us quiet the distractions, fix our attention on Jesus, and become more sensitive to Your leading. Amen. 🙏🏾
